UAE freelance visa — permit, residency and Emirates ID

Residency you sponsor yourself.

What people call a UAE freelance visa is two applications: a freelance permit that lets you trade in your own name, and a residence visa that permit lets you sponsor for yourself. We prepare both files and lodge them with the authorities that decide them — typically 10–12 working days once your documents are in hand. If you already hold UAE residency, you may need only the first.

What you are actually applying for

One name, two applications.

“Freelance visa” is shorthand for a permit and a residence visa applied for together — the right to trade, and the right to stay. We hold a Dubai documents-clearing licence, which is what allows a private firm to prepare and lodge those applications for a client. Each one is granted by the authority that issues it, not by us.

The freelance permit

Your right to trade: a trade name, the activities you choose, and invoices in your own name. For a dependant, a Golden Visa holder or a GCC national this is the whole engagement — you hold the status already.

The residence visa

Your right to live here. The permit is what lets you sponsor it yourself instead of an employer holding it. One or two years, renewable, and it is not cancelled when a contract ends.

The Emirates ID

What makes the residency usable day to day — a bank account, a tenancy, a driving licence, sponsoring your family. Issued after the medical and biometrics.

How an engagement works

Three routes. Which one depends on where you already stand.

One fact settles most of it: whether you already hold UAE residency. If you do — as a dependant, a Golden Visa holder or a GCC national — you need the permit alone and no visa application at all. If you do not, permit and residence visa are filed together as one engagement. There is no list price here because the route, the free zone and the number of activities all move it; the figure comes in writing after a free consultation.

Pay your way: instalment plans are available through Tabby & Tamara. Nothing is payable, and nothing is filed, until the written quote is agreed.

Permit only

For anyone who already holds UAE residency — as a dependant, a Golden Visa holder or a GCC national. You have the status; what is missing is the permit that lets you trade. No visa application arises at all.

Most engagements

Freelance Permit & Residency

What most people mean by a freelance visa: the permit and a self-sponsored residence visa, filed as one engagement. You finish with the right to trade and the right to stay.

  • Freelance permit application
  • Self-sponsored residence visa application
  • Entry permit, or status change without leaving
  • Medical & Emirates ID coordination
  • Activity list built from your invoices
  • Family sponsorship guidance

Two-year visa

A two-year residence visa rather than a one-year one, for people who intend to stay and would rather not repeat this annually. Renewal comes round half as often.

One-year option also available

  • Two-year residence visa application
  • Entry permit, or status change without leaving
  • Medical & Emirates ID coordination
  • Family sponsorship guidance
  • Renewal timing and absence rules explained
  • Bank introduction and document preparation

Each route is quoted individually in writing after a consultation, and our fee is stated separately from the charges the authorities set. What each covers is set out on the pricing page.

How the visa is obtained

Four stages. You are needed in two.

  1. 01

    Scoping

What status you hold today, and what you invoice for. This decides how much of the process applies to you at all: someone already resident here often needs the licence and nothing else, while someone arriving needs both filed together.

  2. 02

    The permit application

Activities agreed against your real invoices, trade name reserved, then the file lodged with the free-zone authority. Initial approval usually returns within 48 hours, and the permit is what the residence visa is then applied for against.

  3. 03

    Status change, or entry permit

Already here on an employment or dependant visa, the status changes in country with no exit run — the sequencing against your notice period is the part that needs care. Arriving from abroad, you travel in on the entry permit instead. Holding residency already, this stage does not apply to you.

  4. 04

    Medical, biometrics and Emirates ID

The residence visa is stamped and the Emirates ID issued. That is the point at which you are a UAE resident sponsored by your own licence — and the point from which a bank will open an account.

Most files complete in 10–12 working days once documents are in hand. Every application is decided by the authority that issues it; our part is preparing and lodging them.

Why the visa, not just the permit

Residency that doesn’t end when the job does.

A permit lets you invoice. The visa is what lets you stay — and it is held in your own name rather than a company’s, which changes what happens the day a contract finishes.

  • Nobody else holds your statusNo employer to cancel it, no notice period attached to it, and no scramble for a new sponsor the week a contract ends.
  • Sponsor your spouse and childrenOnce your own residency is issued you can sponsor family, and in many cases parents, subject to the income and housing evidence the authority asks for.
  • One year or two, renewableThe two-year option exists mainly to halve how often you do this. Whether it earns its higher figure depends on how long you intend to stay.
  • A UAE bank account becomes possiblePersonal and business both. Neither is opened without residency and an Emirates ID behind it, whatever else you have.
  • Invoice in your own nameA trade name and licence number a client’s accounts payable will accept — the thing an employment visa does not allow you to do at all.
  • Stay while you find the next contractYour right to be here is not tied to one client or one employer. That is the whole point of sponsoring yourself.

The specifics

What people ask about the visa itself.

Grouped by where you are starting from — already resident here, or arriving. If yours is not below, it is probably particular to your situation, which is the kind we would rather answer directly than in general.

01What is a UAE freelance visa?

It is shorthand for two applications rather than one document. A freelance permit, issued by a free-zone authority, gives you the right to trade in your own name. A residence visa then follows, sponsored by that permit rather than by an employer, with the medical, biometrics and Emirates ID that complete it. People say “freelance visa” because the residency is the part they want; the permit is what makes it possible.

02How long does the visa last?

One or two years depending on the route, and it renews. The two-year option costs more up front and less per year over its life, which is why most people who intend to stay choose it. The permit renews on its own cycle alongside it.

03Is a freelance visa the same as a Golden Visa?

No. A Golden Visa is long-term residency granted on its own criteria — investment, exceptional talent, certain professions — and it carries no trading rights at all. A freelance visa is ordinary renewable residency sponsored by a permit you hold. Someone with a Golden Visa who wants to invoice still needs the permit; someone on a freelance visa has residency for as long as they keep renewing.

04Do I need the visa, or only the permit?

Only the permit, if you already hold UAE residency through a spouse, a Golden Visa or a GCC passport. Both, if your residency comes from an employer you are leaving, or if you are arriving from abroad. It is the first thing worth establishing, because the two are not close in cost or in time.

05What happens if I stop freelancing?

The residency is tied to the permit, so if the permit lapses the visa follows it. That is the honest trade against employer sponsorship: nobody can cancel it out from under you, but nobody else is maintaining it either. In practice people renew through quiet periods precisely to hold the status.

06How long can I be outside the UAE without losing it?

A residence visa lapses after more than six continuous months outside the country. The rule concerns a single long absence rather than an annual total, so frequent travel is not the problem — one long stay elsewhere is.
