The short answer
A UAE freelance visa is two applications rather than one document. A freelance permit, issued by a free-zone authority, gives you the right to trade in your own name. A residence visa then follows, sponsored by that permit instead of by an employer, with the medical, biometrics and Emirates ID that complete it. People call the pair a freelance visa because residency is the part they want — but if you already hold UAE residency, you need only the permit.
Nobody applies for a “freelance visa”, strictly speaking. It is the name people give to two registrations that together let you work for yourself in the UAE and live here while you do it. The shorthand is useful and we use it too, but it hides the structure underneath — and the structure is what decides what you need, what it costs and how long it takes.
The two halves
| Application | What it gives you | Granted by |
|---|---|---|
| Freelance permit | The right to trade: a trade name, your chosen activities, invoices in your own name | A free-zone authority |
| Residence visa | The right to live here, sponsored by your own permit rather than an employer | UAE immigration |
| Emirates ID | The identity document that makes the residency usable day to day | Issued after medical and biometrics |
Two different authorities are involved, and neither of them is us. A documents-clearing firm prepares and lodges these applications; the decisions belong entirely to the bodies in the right-hand column. Anyone offering you a guaranteed approval is offering something that is not theirs to give, and that is worth treating as a warning rather than a reassurance.
Why the permit has to come first
The residence visa is sponsored by the permit. That is the whole reason the two are applied for together and in that order: without a permit there is nothing to sponsor the visa against, which is why a freelance visa cannot be obtained on its own the way an employment visa can. Your employer sponsors an employment visa; on this route your own licence does the sponsoring.
Who needs both, and who needs one
A good number of people reading this need considerably less than the full pair, and are rarely told so, because almost everything written on the subject assumes you are arriving from abroad.
- Already hold UAE residency — as a dependant, a Golden Visa holder or a GCC national? The permit alone. Your status is settled and no visa application arises.
- On an employment visa? Both, and the sequencing against your notice period matters more than the paperwork does.
- Arriving from outside the country? Both, filed together, entering on an entry permit rather than changing status in place.
- Already licensed and only missing residency? The permit exists; the visa is what is outstanding.
How long it lasts, and renewal
The residence visa runs one or two years depending on the route. Two years costs more up front and less per year over its life, which is why most people who intend to stay take it — the real saving is doing the process half as often. The permit renews on its own cycle, and in practice the two are kept aligned.
One rule is worth committing to memory: a residence visa lapses if you remain outside the UAE for more than six continuous months. It is a rule about a single long absence rather than an annual total, so frequent travel is not a problem. One long stay elsewhere is.
What it costs, and why no figure appears here
Three things move the number: which free zone, how many activities, and whether a residence visa is part of it at all. A permit-only engagement for someone who already holds residency is a fraction of the full pair for someone arriving. A single published figure would therefore be wrong for most of the people reading it, so we do not publish one — you get a written quote after a free consultation, with our fee and the authorities’ charges itemised separately.
It is also worth saying plainly that none of this is a service you cannot obtain yourself. Every application described here can be made directly, at the official fees, and the free official route is set out at the UAE government portal, u.ae. What a consultancy sells is preparation, sequencing and the queueing — not access, which is not ours to sell.
Questions people ask about this
Is a freelance visa the same as a freelance permit?
No, though the words get used interchangeably. The permit is the trading licence; the visa is the residency it sponsors. You can hold a permit without a visa, and if you already have residency that is often exactly the right arrangement.
Can I get the visa without the permit?
Not by this route — the permit is what sponsors it. Other residency routes exist, including employment, Golden Visa and dependant sponsorship, but none of them is a freelance visa and none of them carries trading rights.
How long does the whole thing take?
Typically 10–12 working days once documents are in hand, with initial approval on the permit usually back within 48 hours. Attestation of certificates for family sponsorship runs through your home country and is far slower, so it is worth starting separately and early.
Can I sponsor my family on it?
Yes, once your own residency is issued, subject to the income and accommodation evidence the authority requires. The paperwork on this side is routine; the attestation in the issuing country is the slow part.
