What a freelance visa actually is

What the phrase covers, who issues each part, and how long it lasts.

What is a UAE freelance visa?

It is shorthand for two applications rather than one document. A freelance permit, issued by a free-zone authority, gives you the right to trade in your own name. A residence visa then follows, sponsored by that permit rather than by an employer, with the medical, biometrics and Emirates ID that complete it. People say “freelance visa” because the residency is the part they want; the permit is what makes it possible.

How long does the visa last?

One or two years depending on the route, and it renews. The two-year option costs more up front and less per year over its life, which is why most people who intend to stay choose it. The permit renews on its own cycle alongside it.

Is a freelance visa the same as a Golden Visa?

No. A Golden Visa is long-term residency granted on its own criteria — investment, exceptional talent, certain professions — and it carries no trading rights at all. A freelance visa is ordinary renewable residency sponsored by a permit you hold. Someone with a Golden Visa who wants to invoice still needs the permit; someone on a freelance visa has residency for as long as they keep renewing.

Do I need the visa, or only the permit?

Only the permit, if you already hold UAE residency through a spouse, a Golden Visa or a GCC passport. Both, if your residency comes from an employer you are leaving, or if you are arriving from abroad. It is the first thing worth establishing, because the two are not close in cost or in time.

What happens if I stop freelancing?

The residency is tied to the permit, so if the permit lapses the visa follows it. That is the honest trade against employer sponsorship: nobody can cancel it out from under you, but nobody else is maintaining it either. In practice people renew through quiet periods precisely to hold the status.

How long can I be outside the UAE without losing it?

A residence visa lapses after more than six continuous months outside the country. The rule concerns a single long absence rather than an annual total, so frequent travel is not the problem — one long stay elsewhere is.

If you are already in the UAE

Going independent from a job, or adding a licence to status you already hold.

I am sponsored by my spouse. Do I need a visa at all?

No. You already hold residency, so what is missing is only the licence to invoice under — and that is a materially simpler and cheaper engagement than the full route. Your visa is unaffected: a freelance licence sits alongside a dependant residency rather than replacing it. This is the single most common thing people are surprised by, because most of what is written about UAE freelancing assumes you are arriving.

I hold a Golden Visa. What is actually missing?

The same answer: the licence. A Golden Visa gives you long-term status but not the right to invoice clients in your own name, which is a trading permission and comes from a licence. Nothing about the Golden Visa changes when you take one out.

I am on my employer’s visa. What happens to it?

It is cancelled by your employer, and a self-sponsored residency is processed against your new licence — normally as an in-country status change, with no exit run. The paperwork is routine; the sequencing is not. Your notice period, the cancellation date and the start of the new file have to line up, because a gap between cancellation and the new entry permit leaves you without status. Bring your contract’s notice terms to the first conversation.

Can I set up the licence before I resign?

The licence application does not depend on your employment status, so it can be underway while you are still employed, which is usually the right order. Whether you may invoice anyone before you leave is a different question, governed by your employment contract rather than by licensing — some contracts restrict outside work. That one is for a lawyer, not for us.

I am a GCC national living here. Where do I stand?

You do not need a residence visa, so again it is the licence alone. The activity selection and the trade name matter exactly as much as they would for anyone else, and the bank will still ask its questions.

What if my employment visa is about to be cancelled anyway?

Then the timing pressure is real and worth acting on early. There is a grace period after cancellation to regularise your status, but it exists as a safety margin rather than as a plan, and a file that has not started by the time it runs out becomes considerably more expensive to fix than to avoid.

If you are bringing a practice in from abroad

What changes, what carries over, and what your clients will notice.

Will my existing clients accept an invoice from a UAE entity?

Almost always, and the friction is administrative rather than legal. Your client’s accounts payable will need your new trade name, licence number, address and bank details to set you up as a fresh supplier, which takes their finance team a week or two. The parts that occasionally need attention are withholding tax in the client’s own country and any VAT position they have — both are questions for their accountant and yours, not for us.

Can I keep my company abroad and run both?

Nothing in UAE licensing stops you holding a company elsewhere. Whether you should is a different question, and it belongs with a tax adviser: two entities in two jurisdictions can create residence, permanent-establishment and transfer-pricing questions that are specific to your countries and your revenue. We can license the UAE side; we are not qualified to tell you how the two interact.

What happens to work I invoiced before the licence existed?

It stays what it was — income earned under whatever arrangement you had at the time. A UAE licence is not retrospective, and it does not reach backwards over past invoices. If the timing of the switch matters to your position at home, settle that with your adviser before choosing a start date, because the licence date is one of the few things we can schedule around.

Do I have to close down before I apply?

No. The application is assessed on your documents and your chosen activities, not on what you are currently doing elsewhere. Most people run both for a period and wind the old arrangement down once the residency is issued and the bank account is open, which is the sensible order — an account is much harder to open before you have an Emirates ID.

Is my professional qualification recognised here?

For most consulting, creative, technical and advisory work, no qualification is required at all, and the activity is licensed on its description rather than your certificates. Regulated professions are the exception — medicine, law, engineering, accountancy and similar — where a separate professional registration sits on top of the licence and is granted by the relevant regulator, not by the free zone. Tell us which profession at the consultation and we will say which of the two you are in.

Residency, presence, and the day count

What the UAE expects of a resident, and what tax residency asks on top.

How many days a year do I actually have to be in the UAE?

Two different thresholds get confused here. To keep a residence visa alive you must not remain outside the country for more than six continuous months; that is about avoiding a single long absence, not about a total. Tax residency is stricter and separate: the widely applied test is 183 days of physical presence in a twelve-month period, with narrower routes below that. If your work keeps you elsewhere most of the year, the visa may still be fine while a tax residency certificate is not.

How do I get a tax residency certificate?

It is issued by the Federal Tax Authority on application, and residency is the precondition rather than the whole of it — you also have to evidence the presence and the ties the test asks for. Whether the certificate is any use to you depends entirely on the country you are leaving and what it will still assert over you, which is a question for a tax adviser in that country. We can tell you what the UAE side requires; we cannot tell you what it will achieve for you.

Can I switch from my employment visa without leaving the country?

Usually yes. An in-country status change moves you from an employer-sponsored visa to your own without an exit run, once the employment visa is properly cancelled. The sequencing matters more than the paperwork: your notice period, the cancellation date and the start of the new file have to line up, and a gap between them is the part that causes trouble. Bring your contract’s notice terms to the consultation.

What if I am on a dependant visa already?

Then you may not need a residency application at all. A dependant — like a Golden Visa holder or a GCC national — already holds status, and what is missing is the licence to invoice under. That is the permit-only route, it is materially simpler, and it is the first thing worth establishing about your case.

How long does the residency last, and what does renewal involve?

Freelance residency is issued for one or two years depending on the route, and the licence renews on its own cycle. Renewal is the same shape as the original but shorter: fees, a medical in most cases, and an updated Emirates ID. The two-year route exists mainly to halve how often you do it, and whether it is worth the higher upfront figure depends on how long you intend to stay.

Can I sponsor my family, and how soon?

Once your own residency is issued and your Emirates ID is in hand, you can sponsor a spouse, children and in many cases parents. The gate is usually income evidence and suitable accommodation, both assessed by the authority. Starting the attestation of marriage and birth certificates early is the single most useful thing you can do, because that runs through your home country and is the slowest part by a wide margin.

The licence, and what it lets you bill for

Activities, trade names, and the mismatch that surfaces later.

How do I know my activities cover what I actually invoice for?

You start from the invoices rather than from a job title. Activity lists are written in the authority’s language and rarely match how anyone describes their own work, so the exercise is translating "I run paid social for e-commerce brands" into codes that cover it. Getting this wrong is not fatal but it is expensive: an amendment costs a fee and a delay, and it is usually discovered at the bank rather than at the counter.

How many activities can one licence carry?

Commonly up to ten, depending on the free zone, and they must generally sit within a related family rather than spanning unrelated sectors. For a practice that has broadened over years — consulting plus training plus content, say — that is normally enough to keep everything on one licence rather than splitting it.

Which free zone will you use, and why?

The one your activities and budget point at. We are not an agent for any authority and receive no commission from one, so there is nothing pulling the recommendation. In practice the best-known names are frequently not the best value, and the rights attaching to the licence are the same.

Can I use my own brand name as the trade name?

Usually, subject to the authority’s naming rules — no religious or governmental references, no names already registered, and initials or abbreviations are restricted in some zones. If you have a brand your clients already know and invoices already reference, say so early; a name that has to change after approval is a nuisance across every contract you hold.

Can I hire people under my own licence?

Yes, subject to the visa quota the licence carries and the zone’s rules on it. Establishment cards and quota allocation are part of what we handle, and if hiring is likely within the first year it is worth choosing the zone with that in mind rather than moving later.

Is a freelance licence a lesser thing than a company?

It is a form of business licence, not a junior version of one. The practical differences are that free-zone freelance licences typically need no office tenancy, carry a smaller visa quota, and are issued to you personally rather than to a shareholding structure. For a solo practice that is usually an advantage; for something you intend to raise investment into or sell, it is not, and that is worth saying out loud at the consultation.

Banking, tax and getting paid

The part that takes longest, and the questions we will not answer.

Will a UAE bank open an account if all my income is foreign?

It is the hardest version of the application, and it is very often approved — but on evidence rather than optimism. Banks want to see who pays you, from where, how regularly, and why the UAE is your base. Contracts, an invoice history and a coherent account of your business do more than any introduction. Expect weeks rather than days, and expect to answer questions about source of funds.

Personal account, business account, or both?

Both, in most cases. Clients pay a business account in the trade name on the licence, and mixing that with personal spending is the habit that makes every later question — from the bank or from a tax authority — harder to answer than it needed to be.

Do freelancers pay income tax in the UAE?

There is no personal income tax on employment or freelance earnings in the UAE. That is the straightforward half. Corporate tax is a separate regime with its own thresholds and its own treatment of individuals carrying on business, and whether and when it reaches you depends on facts about your revenue that we are not qualified to assess. Ask a UAE tax adviser, and ask before your first full financial year rather than after it.

Will my home country still tax me?

Possibly, and it is the question people most often assume is settled by moving. Leaving one tax residence is governed by that country’s rules, not by the UAE’s, and some countries make it deliberately hard. This is squarely a question for an adviser in your own jurisdiction, and it is worth answering before you spend anything here — for a minority of people it is the fact that makes the whole exercise pointless.

Do I need to register for VAT?

Only above the registration threshold, and the treatment of services supplied to clients outside the UAE is not the same as for local ones. It is a real question for a practice of any size and it is an accountant’s question, not ours. We will flag when your turnover makes it live.

What is not included in what you quote?

Health insurance, which is mandatory and which you buy directly. Any attestation done in your home country. Bank charges and minimum balances. And any authority fee that changes after we quote you — if that happens, it comes back to you as a decision before we proceed, not as a line on a later invoice.

What our licence permits, and where we stop.

Are you a government agency, or government approved?

No, and neither is any other private firm making that claim — the UAE does not grant private companies government-approved status, so a competitor advertising it is describing something that does not exist. We hold a Dubai documents-clearing licence, which is the real credential: it is what permits a private company to lodge paperwork with government departments on a client’s behalf. Everything else about official channels follows from that, and nothing more.

Can you guarantee my application will be approved?

No, and you should treat a guarantee as a warning rather than a reassurance. Every licence and visa is granted by the authority that issues it, on its own reading of the file. What we can affect is whether the file gives it a reason to hesitate, which is most of what determines the outcome in practice.

Can I do all of this myself?

Yes. Every service we assist with can be obtained directly from the authorities at the official fees, and the free official route is set out at the UAE government portal, u.ae. What you are paying us for is preparation, sequencing and the queueing — not access, which is not ours to sell.

What do you refuse to advise on?

Tax and law. Whether UAE residency improves your position, what your home country will still claim, when corporate tax reaches you, whether an arrangement is employment or a service — all of these turn on facts and rules a documents-clearing licence gives us no standing to interpret. You will get told which adviser to take them to rather than a confident answer from us.

How are your fees structured?

One written quote before anything is filed, itemised so our professional fee and the authorities’ charges are visible separately rather than blended into a single number. Nothing is payable and nothing is lodged until you have agreed it. Instalments are available through Tabby and Tamara.

How quickly will someone reply?

Within an hour during business hours, from a consultant rather than an autoresponder, and the person who replies is the one who keeps your file to the end.

Where are you based?

Trivup Documents Clearing Services works from Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai and files for clients across all seven emirates. Meetings in person are welcome and are rarely necessary — most files are completed without the client visiting the office at all.
