The short answer

The UAE levies no personal income tax on employment or freelance earnings. Separately, it operates a corporate tax regime that can apply to a natural person carrying on a business, with a turnover trigger before any obligation arises and a further threshold below which taxable income is charged at zero per cent. Whether and when either reaches your practice depends on facts about your revenue and structure, and that assessment belongs with a qualified UAE tax adviser.

This is the subject where confident writing does the most damage, so it is worth being explicit about what this article is. It sets out what the rules publicly say and where the boundaries sit. It is not advice on your position, and a documents-clearing licence gives us no standing to offer any.

The part that is simple

The UAE does not levy personal income tax on salaries or on freelance earnings. This is the fact most people move for and it is exactly as straightforward as it sounds. It is also the fact that leads people to assume nothing else applies, which is where the trouble starts.

The part that is not

Corporate tax is a separate regime introduced for business profit, and it does not apply only to companies. A natural person carrying on a business or business activity in the UAE can fall within it, which plainly includes people trading under a freelance licence.

Two figures are widely cited and they answer different questions. There is a turnover trigger below which an individual carrying on business is not brought into the regime at all. Separately, there is a threshold of taxable income below which the rate applied is zero per cent, with the standard rate applying above it. Which of those is doing the work in your case depends on your numbers.

Free-zone status is not an answer by itself

A common assumption is that a free-zone licence removes the question. It does not. Preferential treatment within the regime is conditional, with tests around the nature of the income and the substance of the activity, and it is not something to assume applies because of where the licence was issued. Whether your particular arrangement meets those conditions is, again, an assessment rather than a fact you can read off the licence.

What to do about it, practically

  1. Keep proper books from day one. Retrofitting a year of records to answer a question you did not expect is the expensive version of this.
  2. Keep business and personal money separate, which makes every later question easier to answer.
  3. Get an adviser’s view before your first full financial year closes, not after.
  4. Ask that adviser about VAT registration at the same time; the thresholds are separate and the answer often is too.

None of this is a reason not to come. It is a reason to arrive with an accountant’s number in your phone, and to treat anyone who tells you the UAE means paying nothing, without asking a single question about your revenue, as someone guessing on your behalf.

Questions people ask about this

Do I have to register for corporate tax even if I owe nothing?

Registration obligations and payment obligations are not the same thing, and whether you have the first without the second depends on your circumstances. It is one of the first questions to put to an adviser, because the deadline for it does not wait for the tax to be due.

Does this affect income I earn from clients outside the UAE?

The regime concerns business carried on in the UAE rather than where the client sits, but the interaction between the two is exactly the kind of detail that turns on specifics. Ask an adviser about your own arrangement.
